Compare and Contrast Essay – Ancient Wars and Modern Wars

Compare and Contrast Essay
Ancient Wars and Modern Wars
By Natthanette Choovet (Popp) G.10M

Wars have appeared to be existed on earth since the beginning of human history. They have affected people and shaped the nations for a long time ago. Although time has changed as wars went on, most elements of wars remain the same. Ancient wars and modern wars are found to be similar in many ways. The causes of wars in both ancient times and modern times are alike. The purposes are also similar. The consequences, as well, turn to be the same. Therefore, wars in ancient times and wars in modern times are identical.

The causes of wars in ancient times and wars in modern times are similar. As being written on the book ‘Causes of War’ by Stephen Van Evera, many great wars in history and those presenting now a days have the same causes regarding to human distinction, religions, misunderstanding, and political and economic issues. The Crusades, the series of wars that took place during the 11th through 13th centuries, were the example of wars that resulted from the difference of religion in history as it was the conflict between the Christians and the Muslims (Trueman, 2000). In modern time, the dispute between the Palestinians and Israelis, for instance, also has involved much with religious issue as both sides are struggling over the Holy Land for the sacred places and religious sites (McNeely, 2007). Consequently, the causes of wars in both ancient times and in modern times are in common.

The purposes of wars in history and in modern world are alike as well. According to George Orwell, the basic purposes of creating wars are always that to gain power over the populations, to extend the territories, to get victory over one another, and to take control over the land. The Marathon, the First Persian War in history during 500 B.C., for instance, was occurred as Persia wanted to extend its territory, and the King Darius wanted to conquer Greece. This resulted as the conflict rose between the Persians and the Greece in purpose of the Persians to take over the other side (Califf, 2002). In modern time, Korean War, which broke out during 1950-1953, was an example of war with the purpose of taking control over the land. North Korea attacked South Korea in order to get the land under its control (Korean-War Team Corporation, 2009). Accordingly, the purposes of both ancient wars and modern wars are similar. They all broke with the intention of gaining power and getting the land under control.

The consequences of wars in both ancient times and modern times also turn out to be similar. Although one side may gain victory, wars lead to the loss of the huge numbers of people, as well as the fall of country’s economy and other damages as reported by Thomas Hurka. For example, the Third Macedonian War, which broke out in the history during 171 B.C. - 168 B.C., was resulted in a massive massacre in which countless lives were lost and over 150,000 people were sold into slavery (Heaton, 2005). In recent years, more than 1.5 million people were killed and about 2 million people were displaced during Angola’s 25-year civil war (Lumpkin, 2002). Thus, all wars – no matter in what time period it occurred – gave out the same consequences.

In conclusion, wars in ancient times and wars in modern times have many elements in common. They are caused by nearly the same reasons. They share the similar purposes. Their consequences end up being alike as well. One similarity should be added is that wars, in both ancient times and in modern times, shouldn’t be occurred at all. Although they have affected the world and are important to the history, they are not worth the cost – the loss of people. Last, ancient wars and modern wars are way similar and people should get rid of creating it.

Compare and Contrast between Monotheism and Polytheism

Compare and Contrast
between Monotheism and Polytheism

As the people look for the word “Religion” in a dictionary, religion is the believe in and worship of superhuman controlling power. The religion can be classify into two majors topic, Monotheism and Polytheism. prefix mono means one, and poly means more than one, so believes in only one god, while Polytheism believes in many god. In the same way, Monotheism refuses other survival of god, while Polytheism believe that the other survival gods, or goddess of other religions. But both Monotheism and Polytheism worship of their gods.

According to Shelly Barclay (Sept, 2009), found that “By definition monotheism is the belief in, and worship of, one god only. Polytheism is, by definition, the belief in, and worship of, many gods and/or goddesses”. There are some example for Monotheistic religions. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam believe in only one god though followers of Christianity may worship Jesus Christ. Firstly, before the Jews appear, Judaism and Christianity are similar, they believe in the same god. For Islam, the largest religion, also believe in only one god, Allah.

Rit Nosotro told that “Monotheistic religions deny existence of gods of all other religions, unlike Polytheists who believe that there can be more gods than what they themselves worship”. From this quote shows that Monotheistic cling to only one god, and seem like they will not believe in the other gods anymore although later, Monotheism beginning to move to Polytheism. In this time Monotheists have been seen as tolerant of other religions. Rit Nosotro also told the reason that Monotheists become Polytheists. “They became Polytheists because they wanted gods that they could control themselves to explain away, or give licenses to their lifestyles that God would not tolerate”.

Monotheism and Polytheism are really differ, but in the differences could be found the similarity, as well. Both,  Monotheism and Polytheism have been worshiping of their gods. Each religions have the difference religious ceremony. For example, according to the world wide web pujas.com, told that “Islam worship is everything one says or does for the pleasure of Allah. This, of course, includes rituals as well as beliefs, social activities, and personal contributions to the welfare of one's fellow human-beings”.

Finally, this essay has focused on the differences and similarity between Monotheism and Polytheism. Though each religions are differ, as the discussed above, in the differences could be found the similarity. Except for the religion worshiping, every religion taught their follower to be a good person who has a good moral and good action as well. The religion followers who can follow the religions instructions will be a successful, prosperity comes in their life identically.

Purchasing a PSP with 5 Bucks Missing.

One day during my last week in the states, I was brought to a huge shopping mall the size of the moon by the host family. The only first thing I can think of is games. I run into the game section and started throwing goods into a basket without realizing the money in my pocket. As soon as I'm satisfied with the stuff in this basket, I walked straightly to this gigantic man in the cashier. I took my money from the pocket and started counting. The total was about 200 something bucks, I couln't remember. My money wasn't enough ! I was 5 bucks short and I had no idea where my friend was. I ask this giant in the cashier to wait and started running like a deer being chased by a lion searching for my friend on this gargantuan moon-like shopping mall for an extra 5 bucks. I ran to all of the other sections to search for him, I was fully covered with sweat. Lastly after I ran across Texas to this silly toy section with my friend holding a stupid Ben10's toy and I ask him for the money. I ran back to this giant with a grumpy face and handed him the money, I puff.

The excitement of getting a PSP was remarkable. I used to be addict to the PSP, but I realized that I grew enough to be messing with video games.

Chaing Mai Night Safari

It was the first time I traveled to "Chiang Mai Night Safari". Actually I have a dinner there, but it was just 5 p.m., promptly, a narrow path appeared to my eyes. As fast as the light, I ran to my brother, caught his hand, pulled him, and walked along the path. It was a safari, I was very happy with the new one's world mates. All of the animals is as closed to me like they want to play with me, but it can not happen. No one play with the Himalayan black bear, me also. Almost end of the journey, it was a big bear seem like a bear, but it was not. It look at me ferociously, just a short fence between us. 1 2 3 run! Run, run, and run, I ran as fast as I can. My trip was end, I was very tried, so I fill my energy with the great meal.

My First Teenage Year and the Most Embarrassed Moment Ever.

My First Teenage Year and the Most Embarrassed Moment Ever.
By: Natthanette Choovet (Popp) G.10M

I always thought of myself as a naive donkey when I first reached the teenage year. That idea, however, had been strongly objected by my mom. To her, me becoming a teen was like a fresh little butterfly with a couple of tiny new vivid wings that ready to flutter gracefully, leaving a jolly old world of a wingless-but-still-pretty caterpillar behind. The first mission to become an appealing butterfly is to fly across the sky, swinging the engaging wings above all the flowers. There I was – being brought to a fashion week event, where fresh butterflies are introduced to the world that “Hey dudes! We are not the wimpy caterpillars anymore!” And so the most embarrassed to the worst moment of my life had begun.

The first step into the event was perfect. I was dressed in a fine designer cloth showing my glowing smooth skin as soft as cotton. My silky shining straight hairs were strikingly blown as if it was gently carried by the wind. Looking at me might give you an image of a beautiful princess who will soon become a queen. The donkey inside of me had disappeared. I felt flowers under my feet at each step I walked. All eyes were focused on me since I was so brand-new. I felt butterflies in my tummy. Suddenly, a couple of teenagers, whose mothers are my mom’s friends, walked to me. One of them was an enchantingly pale, vigorously tall, and incredibly good-looking guy. His glances, his crooked smiles, and every word he uttered all together totally cast a spell over me. A princess finally found her prince charming. Another one was a pretty lady who was so nice, but, unfortunately, I didn’t really give an eye to much.

We had such a bewitching moment. I found myself walking delightedly after my prince charming all over the time. I heard people greeting me, but I was so blind that I couldn’t see anyone but him. As I didn’t want to be pig eating bran of rice in front of him, I didn’t eat at all. Instead, I drank six glasses of what I thought was lemonade served by the bartenders to keep my stomach from screaming. My sense of taste didn’t work out right that even chewing the whole lemon couldn’t give the sourness to my tongue. To be honest, all my sensory receptors were blocked by his charm. As time passed by, we were called to get into a hall to watch the fashion show. We teenagers were set to sit in the third row. Flashes came out from the cameras in everywhere, so dazzling bright as the lightning before a violent storm. Metallic beats sounds were furiously traveling out of the surrounding loudspeakers as if it was the sound of the thunder announcing that the storm will be broke in a few seconds. And the show began.

Skinny shaped models consecutively walked out to the front stage with the neat classy costumes. They were prominent, gangling, and irresistible. Their faces were still and their motions were constant; just like those lifeless movable Barbie dolls. As the finale dress was released into the stage, my sight was blurred. I turned left to face my prince charming but I could faintly saw him. The flashes and the lights in every angle collided into my eyes. All the beats, together with the whispering sounds of the audiences, boomed into my ears. My body went beyond control. My consciousness flew away. The heavy stone was thrown to my body, and, insufferably, I collapsed.

It was all dark. I was so torturous as if I was apple-poisoned by a cruel stepmother. I heard a person calling my name. There I realized I don’t have any stepmother because it was my real mom calling me. I was surrounded by many people, but there was no sight of my prince charming. I recognized from the foul odor as smelly as rotten cheese and the disgusting smudges of decomposed food on my dress that I had puked myself for several times. Sure, my prince charming would saw it as well as other people in the hall. To be clear, the guard elucidated the reason I collapsed. It turned out that what I thought was lemonade was actually alcohol drinks. I was just a loathsome drunkard in my prince’s perspective. Worse, I didn’t even have a chance to explain my stupidity to him. The mission failed, and I couldn’t fly. I never get a chance to fly across the flowers nor meet that guy ever again. A princess has lost her prince charming forever. A butterfly failed flipping its wing. I became a donkey again, and lived happily never after.
